Use YouTube Ads with SegMetrics

SegMetrics gives you the ability to analyze your Google Ads and YouTube campaign performance and connect it to other data sources.

With that information, you can easily segment that data into your leads, find the automation triggers that convert to customers, understand where your most valuable leads are coming from, and more!

SegMetrics takes the spend from Google Ads and purchases from your payment processor then connects them to the email addresses in your email marketing platform.

How to connect YouTube Ads to SegMetrics

Since your YouTube ads are directly managed in your Google Ads account, the following steps will automatically integrate with your YouTube ads, as well as any other Google search and shopping campaigns you might currently be running in your ads account.

  1. Click on the gear icon in the top right corner and then click "Integrations"

  1. From the integrations page, click Ads, then select the Google Ads integration.
  2. You’ll be redirected to login to the Google Adwords account you’d like to connect.
  3. Once you’ve selected the Google account, continue through Google’s prompts to confirm the account.
  4. Once you have connected the ad platform, you'll want to install the Google-specific tracking parameters to your ads so that SegMetrics can connect individual users to each click on your ads. Follow along the next section to learn how to get those parameters installed.

Configure Your YouTube Ads With Tracking Parameters

Now that you’re hooked up to your YouTube ads, the next step is to install the required tracking parameters to Google’s global settings inside the Ads account.

  1. Copy the following URL parameters to your computer: utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_source={network}&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content={placement}&utm_term={keyword}&seg_aprod={product_id}&ad_id={creative}
  2. From your Google / YouTube ad account, click Settings
  3. Click Account Settings
  4. From the Settings screen, click on Tracking
  5. Paste the URL parameters into the Final URL Suffix
  6. Click Save

How much historical data is synced when you first connect Google Ads to SegMetrics?

When you connect a new Google Ads Data Source, we import the last month of ad spend, clicks and impressions for all currently active ads. Lead attribution will start as soon as the ads are configured for tracking.

Pro Tip: Once Google Ads is connected and actively syncing data, we store the data that's collected in our own database. This allows us to accumulate more data over time as more data syncs are made so that you can report on more historical Google Ads data in your SegMetrics reports.

How to build a Report using Google Ads data

Once your data is imported from Google Ads, you can create reports with the data to see how each touchpoint influences your sales.

  1. Click Acquisition > Advertising
  2. Select your desired filters based on dates, tags and touchpoints
  3. Save it to come back to or to include the data in a custom dashboard

Frequently Asked Questions

What time zone is Google Ads data synced in?

Google Ads data is synced in UTC. SegMetrics reports on your data based on the timezone that you set in your Account Settings

What ad types do you support?

We support all ad types from the standard Google Ads API. Please note that at this time (July, 2020) the Google Ads API does not provide information on Discovery Ads. If you are using Discovery Ads in your marketing, currently that data will not be available in SegMetrics.

We are also currently in the process of integrating with Performance Max campaigns types.

We do not currently integrate with Google Experimental Campaigns.

Why am I not seeing clicks but not any leads in SegMetrics?

This can be caused by a couple of factors, but all are easy to solve. Please go through the checklist below to make sure that the tracking is set up correctly:

  1. Confirm that your SegMetrics Tracking Pixel is installed on all the pages, including the Landing Page that the ads are pointing to, as well as any order forms or optins after the initial landing page. You can use the Tracking Pixel Debugger to make sure that the tracking is installed.
  2. Make sure that ad_id={creative} is included in the Final URL Suffix and that the ad id is being correctly passed to the landing page.
  3. Confirm that the leads are entering their email address on a page that has the Tracking Pixel installed, and that if you're using any 3rd Party optin forms (like Acuity, WebinarJam, etc) that they have the tracking pixel installed as well.
  4. Finally, make sure that the leads are getting added to your email marketing system. (People not getting added to the marketing is more common than you think!)
  5. If you're still not seeing leads come through, please contact us at support@segmetrics.io and we'll get you up and running ASAP!
