Active Contacts & Pricing

So what are my active contacts anyway?  Listen below to learn what active contacts are.

Hey, I'm Keith Perhac, founder of SegMetrics.

If you're on our pricing page trying to figure out what you'd pay each month to use SegMetrics, this video is for you. I'll explain what active contacts are, how to find out how many you have, and how to get a good estimate on your SegMetrics pricing.

We really believe in transparency at SegMetrics, so if you have any questions, you can always book a demo via the button at the bottom of this page, or you can reach out to our customer success team at support@segmetrics.io. We're here to help you.

Okay, so our billing is based on active contacts. In short, we only want to bill if we're tracking a real, identified person you are actively engaging with. After all, that's the data you really want to see.

So imagine the pool of all of your contacts and visitors and followers — who gets counted towards SegMetrics?

First, get the number of subscribed contacts in your ESP or CRM. These are real identifiable people that you're marketing to, and these are the core of who we're talking about when we say active contacts.

Then add in anyone who is not in those contacts that bought from you in the last 30 days. Those people are active too. If they're already a subscriber, then we don't double count.

Same thing for anyone who has an active recurring subscription or who has an active sales deal in the last 30 days.

Finally, anyone on your list who visited your website in the last 30 days. This includes those identifiable contacts who are low key stalking you even after they unsubscribed, but it doesn't include anonymous visitors.

The easiest way to get a good ballpark of how many active contacts you have is to check what your ESP charges you for. Their active contact count is basically the same as your active contact number within SegMetrics.

For example, if Kit says you have 20,000 active subscribers, if ActiveCampaign is billing you for 20,000 contacts, if Klaviyo shows 20,000 active profiles — that's your number. We'll be within about 1–2% of that.

Note that active contacts isn't your list size. Your list includes people who are unsubscribed too. On average, we find that active contacts is around 70–80% of list size.

So active contacts includes contacts who fit any of these criteria:

They’re marked as active in your ESP.

They aren’t anonymous but have visited your website recently.

They’ve made a purchase in the last 30 days.

Or they have an active subscription or a deal status in the last 30 days.

So why do we base our pricing on active contacts?

Most other analytics tools charge based on your revenue. And that may sound simpler, but think about it. If you have a huge launch and your revenue doubles — boom — your analytics cost just doubled too.

Revenue-based pricing is like a growth tax on your success. You pay more even though you're using the exact same features and getting the exact same value. And I don’t like that. Honestly, most users don’t like that.

That’s why we don’t use revenue-based pricing at SegMetrics. With our active contact-based pricing, you only pay more when your actual audience grows — when you're reaching more people, engaging more contacts, and crunching more marketing data.

In addition, SegMetrics is just more affordable than almost every other analytics solution out there. Our goal is to bring top-notch marketing analytics to everyone, including small to medium-sized businesses who don’t keep full-time data analysts on staff. With SegMetrics, we’ll do the heavy lifting.

If you still have questions, reach out to us at support@segmetrics.io. We’ll get you the answers you need.

And remember, we offer a 14-day free trial at every tier so you can test drive SegMetrics using your own data. Once you sign up, one of our customer success reps will reach out and help you get up and running super fast.

Once again, I'm Keith Perhac, founder of SegMetrics. Thanks for your interest.

We’re really passionate about helping businesses unlock data-driven marketing. I hope you’ll start a trial and experience the power of SegMetrics for yourself.

Thanks for watching.
