Tracking Links (URL Builders)

Tracking Links help you measure the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns. Use them when you're directing traffic to a page with the SegMetrics tracking code from somewhere other than a call-to-action on your own site, like an email blast, PPC campaign, banner ad, and so forth. A Tracking Link is a normal URL with parameters attached to it. When visitors come to your site from a Tracking Link, SegMetrics will track that people came from that specific link (rather than the generic UTM tracking).
NOTE: You do not need to create a Tracking Link for SegMetrics to track visitors. Tracking Links provide a simple way to manage and monitor links that you use for ads, email broadcasts or campaigns.

Create a Tracking Link

  1. In your SegMetrics account, click on Tracking Links on the left hand menu.
  2. Click Create Link
  3. Choose either the Builder or Existing Link
  4. Choose a name for the link
  5. Enter a valid URL for your page in the URL field, including the protocol (http:// or https://). This can be the URL of any page with the SegMetrics tracking code on it. 
  6. Click the UTM Source dropdown menu and select the source value you want to use, or enter a new one. Use the name of where the link is coming from (facebook, google, newsletter, etc)
  7. Click the UTM Medium dropdown menu and select the source value you want to use, or enter a new one. Enter the name of where you plan to be using the link (cpc, banner, email etc)
  8. Click the UTM Campaign dropdown menu and select the SegMetrics campaign you want to use, or enter a new campaign name. 
  9. (Optional) Click the UTM Content dropdown menu and select the source value you want to use, or enter a new one. Enter the name of your banner ad, social post, email, etc.
  10. (Optional) Click the UTM Term dropdown menu and select the source value you want to use, or enter a new one. 
  11. Click Save Link

Use the Tracking Link in Your Content

  1. In your SegMetrics account, click on Tracking Links on the left hand menu.
  2. You can search for the Tracking Link that you want to use, either by name, or by part of the link itself.
  3. Click the Copy icon to copy the link to your clipboard.
  4. Paste the URL into your piece of content. 

Analyze your tracking URLs

  1. In your SegMetrics account, click on Tracking Links on the left hand menu.
  2. You can search for the Tracking Link that you want to use, either by name, or by part of the link itself.
  3. Click the number of Contacts listed by the link to open the contact report.

Additionally, you can filter by the Tracking Links directly from your existing reports

  1. In your Segmetrics account, click on any of the report types in the left-hand menu.
  2. Click Add Filter
  3. Click on the Lightning Bolt icon
  4. Choose Tracked Link

  5. Select the Tracking Link you want to report on.

  6. Click Add Filter


How to Test Your Tracking


This support documentation will walk you through the process of testing your tracking links in SegMetrics to ensure they are functioning correctly. By conducting thorough testing, you can confirm that your tracking links are accurately capturing conversions and providing reliable data for your marketing campaigns.


Here's how to test your tracking links using the debugger feature:

  1. Go to the Tracking Links tab in the left sidebar.

  2. Find the link you want to test and copy it to your clipboard.

  3. Go to your Site Setup Page.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page to the Debug Tracking Pixel section.

  5. Paste your tracking link into the field.
  6. Click on the Start Debugger button to test the link.
  7. SegMetrics will open the landing page in a new tab, and you can check if the link is tracking correctly by looking at the debugger on the screen.
  8. You should see all of the UTMs captured within the debugger screen.
